Chippa United have formally asked the Premier Soccer League to host their Betway Premiership match against Mamelodi Sundowns FC at Buffalo City Stadium. The request follows a decision that the playing surface at their primary home, Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, is not ready to stage the game this Saturday.
The potential switch would mark a second visit for Sundowns to the East London venue, their last being a successful fixture in May 2025. The Brazilians head into the new season as runners-up, having finished the 2025 campaign just one point behind champions Orlando Pirates with 68 points from 30 games.
Why is the venue change necessary?
Maintenance work on both Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium and Buffalo City Stadium in August forced Chippa to play home games at alternative locations. One such fixture saw them host Orlando Pirates in Durban last month. While Chippa announced on August 25 that both venues had received approval for future use, that clearance was unexpectedly reversed on Monday. The Mandela Bay Development Agency confirmed the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium had recently finished installing a new pitch, which underwent intensive restoration before the PSL season plan was released. Despite expressing confidence the stadium is now ready, the agency's decision stripped it of this weekend's match.

The late change has caused significant disruption for fans. Chippa United issued a direct apology to their supporters. "We apologise to our supporters, particularly those who have already purchased tickets or made arrangements to attend the match in Nelson Mandela [Bay]," the club said. Buffalo City Stadium, listed as Chippa's official alternative venue, hosted their most recent home game against Milford FC this past Saturday, a match that ended in a goalless draw.
