Junior Khanye has publicly questioned the selection of Mamelodi Sundowns captain Themba Zwane in the latest Bafana Bafana squad. The former Kaizer Chiefs winger and current commentator raised concerns over Zwane's inclusion given his limited playing time for the league leaders this season.
Khanye made his comments during an appearance on Metro FM, also questioning the call-up for Orlando Pirates striker Yanela Mbuthuma. He expressed confusion over the selections despite his admiration for national team coach Pitso Mosimane.
"The bringing of the likes of Mbuthuma, me, I don't understand," Khanye said. "I love coach Pitso, and I love his identity. The way his team plays, I love him."
He specifically highlighted the situation with Zwane, who is affectionately known as 'Mshishi' by supporters. "I love Themba Mshishi. He's done well for himself individually, but it's unnecessary for me. He's not playing for Sundowns," Khanye added.
The criticism comes as Mamelodi Sundowns continue their strong domestic form, sitting first in the Premier Soccer League with 20 points from eight games. Their recent run includes four wins and a draw from their last five matches, maintaining a four-point lead over rivals Orlando Pirates. Sundowns' next fixture is a league match against Cape Town City on Saturday.
Zwane's role at Sundowns has been reduced this campaign despite the team's success. Mosimane, who previously managed Zwane at Sundowns before taking the national team job, has not publicly responded to Khanye's comments. The Bafana Bafana squad is preparing for an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Guinea at Orlando Stadium on 26 September, followed by a trip to face Eritrea four days later.
Mbuthuma, who joined Pirates from Richards Bay at the start of the season, has nine appearances with two goals and two assists. The debate centres on Mosimane's selection policy, with Khanye suggesting current club form should be the primary criterion. Sundowns' squad depth and current standings position show the competition for places at the club is intense.
