Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has issued a stern warning to Golden Arrows ahead of the MTN8 semi‑final on Sunday at Lucas Moripe Stadium. Cardoso, who will also travel to King Zwelithini Stadium for the return leg a week later, stressed the need for total control after last year’s tough match.
Tactical Focus
Cardoso is under no illusion about the threat posed by Abafana Bes’thende. He highlighted the difficulty of the task and referenced the previous struggles against the KwaZulu‑Natal side. "We are starting off at home, but we know that it is always difficult to play Golden Arrows away from home," he said. "Last year, they gave us one of our most toughest matches," Cardoso admitted.
The coach said the team’s job is to establish control and limit the visitors’ counter‑attacks. He will focus on neutralising the pace that Arrows bring to the pitch and will demand sustained possession to prevent the visitors from finding their rhythm.
Defensive Concerns
One of the primary concerns heading into the weekend is the lack of clean sheets. The Brazilians have kept their goal untouched only once in their opening four matches of the new campaign. Against a side like Arrows, who are renowned for their clinical nature on the break, Cardoso knows that defensive transitions must be flawless.
He has spent the week reinforcing tactical discipline, specifically focusing on how the backline reacts when the ball is turned over in the middle third. "We need to protect the space behind our defence as soon as we lose the ball because Arrows possess quick players and we need to understand certain tactical behaviours," the coach explained.
Cardoso added that small mistakes are highly penalised and that the players must be reminded of the correct tactical choices to make. "We have to fight as best we can the moment we lose the ball," he concluded.
