The injury occurred just before the interval and was confirmed by medical staff as a severe rupture. Mudau has been a cornerstone of the Brazilians’ recent success, both domestically and on the continent, and his absence presents a major tactical challenge for head coach Miguel Cardoso.
Cardoso’s Response
Speaking at a press conference at MTN headquarters in Randburg on Thursday, Cardoso acknowledged the difficulty of replacing a player of Mudau’s calibre. He highlighted the squad’s depth, naming Thapelo Morena and Zuko Mdunyelwa as potential replacements. Cardoso said, “We have two players in that position, obviously, Morena and Zuko. Obviously, you saw how important Thapelo was last season in the CAF Champions League and how we missed him in terms of managing certain contexts.” He added that the loss of a starter is never ideal but provides a platform for fringe players to demonstrate their value.
Opportunities for Fringe Players
Cardoso stressed that the lack of minutes for some squad members is not a reflection of their quality but a result of the high level of performance maintained by the starting eleven. He noted that with Mudau unavailable, the door has opened for those who have been waiting patiently in the wings. “Sometimes players are not promoted not because they are not ready but because there is no opportunity,” he said. Cardoso also highlighted the readiness of Mdunyelwa, who filled the void during the mid‑week fixture.

Despite the setback, the mood within the Sundowns camp remains focused on the upcoming silverware hunt. The next match will also allow us to have a better position on that. There will be chances for others for sure.”
