Miguel Cardoso, head coach of Mamelodi Sundowns, expressed his belief that the move of 20-year-old defender Thato Sibiya to French club Lille presents a significant opportunity for the young player's development. Sibiya, who has been part of the South African national U20 team, has recently featured in the FIFA U20 World Cup in Chile and was part of Sundowns' first-team squad during their pre-season camp in Austria. Reports indicate that Sundowns have agreed to a loan move with an option to buy, allowing Sibiya to continue his growth in France.
Cardoso, who previously coached in France, sees Lille as a club that offers excellent facilities and a stable process for developing young players. 'Regarding Thato, it’s a fantastic opportunity,' Cardoso said. 'As you know, I coached in France, so I know very well the club he goes to, I know very well the facilities that they have, I know very well the stability in terms of the process of developing young players.' The Portuguese coach also believes that Sibiya is ready for the challenge, but stresses that his development will continue beyond the initial move.
Cardoso acknowledges that French football is particularly competitive and physically demanding. 'French football is very special, it’s a very flat football. He will have to cope with a lot of fast players, it’s a game of transition, a lot of exploitation of spaces,' he explained. 'In some moments it can be compared to our game, but Lille is a good school of football, a team that likes to play good football.' Despite the potential loss of Sibiya before he establishes himself at Chloorkop, Cardoso sees the move as a significant opportunity for both Sundowns and the South African national team. 'As much as we believe he could be an important player for the future of Sundowns, we also know he will be an important player for the future of South Africa - that’s an opportunity it’s difficult to say no.'
