Iqraam Rayners fired Mamelodi Sundowns into the Carling Knockout semi-finals with a 1-0 victory over Golden Arrows. The striker's 69th-minute goal on Tuesday was enough to secure a narrow quarter-final win.
Rayners, now the club's top scorer this season with four goals in seven appearances, finished from close range after a cross from Antonio van Wyk. The goal came just four minutes after coach Miguel Cardoso made a triple substitution, a move that changed the game's momentum. Van Wyk was later replaced by N. Santos in the 84th minute.
The match was a tight affair, with Sundowns struggling to create clear chances for long periods. Golden Arrows threatened early, with Siyanda Ndlovu hitting the crossbar in the 14th minute. Sundowns defender Bathusi Aubaas was booked inside the opening ten minutes for a collision with Maxwele. The defensive pairing of Mothobi Mvala and Malibongwe Khoza grew stronger as the game went on, effectively neutralising the threat of Golden Arrows forward Junior Dion in the second half.
Goalkeeper Ricardo Goss and Aubaas were the only two players to retain their starting spots from the previous match. The win extends Sundowns' impressive form, which sees them top of the Premier Soccer League with 26 points from ten games, having recorded eight wins and two draws. They are currently one point clear of Orlando Pirates and have a strong goal difference of plus eighteen, having scored 27 goals and conceded just nine this season. Their recent form of three wins and two draws from their last five league games, including a current three-game winning run, shows their consistency. This cup victory follows recent league successes, including a 4-1 win over Durban City on 31 October and a 1-0 win over Marumo Gallants on 27 October.
The victory sets up a semi-final clash away to Kruger United on 28 November. Before that, the league leaders will look to maintain their position at the summit of the standings. Their next fixture is a Premier Soccer League match against Polokwane City on 23 November. Sundowns have won their last three meetings with Polokwane City, scoring eight goals and conceding only one. Their recent results, including a 4-1 win over Durban City, show a team in strong form as they continue to compete on multiple fronts.
