Rulani Mokwena has revealed he personally recommended Relebohile Mofokeng to Mamelodi Sundowns before the young star joined Orlando Pirates. The former Sundowns coach spotted Mofokeng playing for School of Excellence in an Engen Knockout match against Orlando Pirates and immediately contacted the club's academy leadership.
Mokwena reached out to Shawn Bishop, who was then Sundowns' Head of Youth and Methodology and Coaching. He told Bishop to sign the team's number 10. "Orlando Pirates was very, very aggressive with trying to also secure him," Mokwena said.
Despite Mokwena's strong endorsement, Mamelodi Sundowns' recruitment drive for the talented midfielder ultimately fell short. No specific contract details or transfer fees from that period have been disclosed. Orlando Pirates moved decisively to bring Mofokeng into their system, a move that proved key for his development.
The move to Pirates provided Mofokeng with key playing opportunities and a strong mentorship environment, which a coach from Pyramids FC later praised. His progress has been rapid, earning him senior international recognition with Bafana Bafana. He is now regarded as one of South African football's most exciting young talents.
This reflection on a missed opportunity comes as Mamelodi Sundowns enjoy a strong start to the current season. They sit first in the Premier Soccer League with 20 points from eight games, holding a one-point lead over Orlando Pirates. Their recent form shows four wins and a draw from their last five matches. The team now prepares for their next challenge, an away fixture against Richards Bay on 17 October.
