Mamelodi Sundowns have signed left-footed centre-back Wandile Dube from AmaZulu in a deadline-day move to strengthen their defensive options. The 22-year-old defender joins the league leaders to address a specific tactical need in their squad.

Sinesipho Mali, the former SAFA performance analyst and now AmaZulu's Head of Football Strategy, explained the rarity of the player profile. He noted that 70 percent of PSL teams deploy right-footed centre-backs, making Dube's signing a strategic acquisition for Sundowns' ball-retention model under Miguel Cardoso. "At Bafana we struggled to find left-footed centre-backs for the longest time until we got Rushwin [Dortley], so that talks to the scarcity," Mali said.

A left-footed player in central defence provides more natural passing angles when distributing to the left flank, a key component of Sundowns' possession-based system. Mali praised Dube's unique combination of a great physical profile and high technical ability, a balance he described as rare. The defender's composure, aerial strength, and robust defensive instincts are seen as assets that will suit the demands of both domestic and continental football.

Dube arrives at a club sitting first in the Premier Soccer League with 20 points from eight games, holding a one-point lead at the top. He will compete for a place in a squad already rich with international talent as Sundowns aim to maintain their unbeaten recent form of four wins and a draw. His primary task will be to fight for minutes and add depth to a defence that has conceded only seven league goals this season.

While acknowledging Dube's move to the defending champions as a logical step in his development, AmaZulu expressed confidence in their youth structures to fill the gap. The club, also known as Usuthu, recognised the lure of joining Sundowns was a major factor in the deal. Dube had not featured for AmaZulu this season prior to the transfer.

The signing concludes a busy period for Sundowns' recruitment, with their growing scouting department identifying Dube as a target. With the club also competing on the continental stage, Dube's attributes are expected to contribute to the pursuit of silverware across all fronts.
